School books!

What a pile of books eh?

Saturday morning the postman came by with a very large box which was addressed to me. There were my new school books. We ordered those books a couple of weeks ago by the internet. Man what a pile that is!

It was rather fun to see through those books. In about 2 weeks the summer holidays are over and than I’ll have to go to my new school. I’ve already been to my new school by bike just to see what the best route will be to go there, grandpa and Mark went along. Well it turned out to be exact 10 km (6, 22 miles). We cycled the entire track in about 40 minutes and turned home in 36 minutes, it all turned out better than expected.

August 28th Mark and I have to go to school the first time to pick up our timetable and go to the school photographer. What we will do more that day we don’t know yet. One week later we will go with our new class on a project week to Orvelte, however, it’s all very exciting!

See you later!

Here in The Netherlands you go to school when you reached the age of 4 years and than you will go to the first grade of the primary school (elementary school; literally, "basis school). The 8th grade is the last grade of the primary school. When you do your best at school you will promote to the next grade year after year and you’ll be 12 years old when you’ll leave the primary school.

After the primary school you’ll go to another school to continue your education we call that voortgezet onderwijs (high school; literally "continued education"). There are several types of education.
The VMBO (voorbereidend middelbaar beroepsonderwijs, literally, "preparatory middle-level vocational education") that lasts four years, from the age of twelve to sixteen.

The HAVO (hoger algemeen voortgezet onderwijs, literally, "higher general continued education") has five grades and is attended from age twelve to seventeen. A HAVO diploma provides access to the HBO-level (polytechnic) of tertiary education.

The VWO (voorbereidend wetenschappelijk onderwijs, literally, "preparatory scientific education") has six grades and is attended from age twelve to eighteen. A VWO diploma provides access to the university. Another term for this route of education is Atheneum.

I’ll go to a HAVO/Atheneum class. That’s an orientation class after 2 years it will be clear in which level I‘ll do my exams.

That is all rather different than it is with you eh? Quite funny to hear that!
